What is Open-Site?

Open-Site is an internet community project which aims to build a free, trusted, and peer-reviewed encyclopedia. Unlike other online encyclopedias, Open-Site is not openly editable to the public. By contrast, editors must first apply to edit by completing a simple application. Once accepted, editors may then freely edit anywhere within the project, however their edits still need to be reviewed by a senior editor before they are published to the public site. Our editorial model is in place not only as a safeguard against abuse, but it also serves to ensure the reader gets the most accurate information possible.

How is Open-Site unique?

Open-Site is far different that other online encyclopedias--beginning with our software. Open-Site runs on "Open-Site Code 2.0", which basically is a CMS (content management system). Our software is not a wiki; rather, it uses its own simple style for easy creation of articles and sections. Since we're not using wiki, our articles can easily be parsed and spooled to PDF, RDF, XML, and HTML. One day the Open-Site encyclopedia could be published as a paper book!

Our encyclopedia also uses a categorical layout for the organization of articles. Unlike other online encyclopedias, which don't even have a sane index, Open-Site has each article classified under a definitive category, which allows the encyclopedia to be browsed easily and in a sane manor.

What about Wikipedia?

Today it seems a lot of people want only one online encyclopedia, which happens to be Wikipedia. Having one major free encyclopedia, in our opinion, is not totally desirable since it's only one source of information. Our project is not against or "Anti-Wikipedia", by contrast we support their work and their love for freedom. However, there has to be another free encyclopedia for information to be compared against, otherwise whatever the one large encyclopedia says will generally be accepted as truth.

What is the purpose of Open Site?

The Open Site Encyclopedia Project aims to be the most comprehensive, informational, volunteer-powered web-site on the Internet. Its purpose is to create, into an organized structure, content of different types, from different topics, and to share it back to the Internet community.

We aim to be comprehensive and to reflect the depth of human knowledge in different topics and areas. We intend to present all points of view in controversial matters and to maintain our objectivity when dealing with hot topics.

We aim to be informational and to offer back to the Internet community the data built by our editors. We aim at creating a resource where surfers will be able to find information from topics they are interested in. Also, we give to any site the permission to freely use this data, according to our open license. For more information, see Using Our Data.

We give the Internet community the opportunity to manage itself by offering anybody a chance to join and contribute. Senior editors will receive support, tools and abilities to manage the community and to push forward the evolution of the project. For information, see Becoming an Editor, Our Editors and Proposing Content.

Is Open Site a dictionary or encyclopedia?

Many people have compared Open-Site with a dictionary or encyclopedia. While we have characteristics of both of them, we have also particularities that differentiate us from them. The best suitable description for Open-site is "informational, volunteer-based web-site".

Open Site offers both definitions on words and encyclopedic articles on topics, yet we also inlcude a huge range of other information, like why dinosaurs vanished, who went in the Apollo 11 mission, the results for the latest soccer games, track information for musical releases and regular news updates.

How is Open Site different from the Open Directory Project?

The Open Site Encyclopedia Project was founded in March 2002 based on the Open Directory Project editing model.

While it may appear just like the Open Directory Project, the Open Site Encyclopedia Project is actually very different. While ODP stores only links, Open Site extends upon the model by building, on a similar structure, a website with a huge range of content.
