Origins

Softball evolved from the need of sport that could be played indoors during the winter. The first game of softball was played indoors at a gymnasium in Chicago, Illinois in November of 1887. The inventor, George Hancock used modified rules of baseball to accomodate the smaller playing area. The first game was played with laces of boxing gloves tied together for a ball and a chalked playing field upon the indoor floor. The final score of the first game was 41-40.
