Overview

Medicinal chemistry is at the forefront of scientific innnovation. It blends fields of Chemistry such as synthetic chemistry, molecular modeling, computational biology, structural genomics, and pharmacology to discover and design new drugs. Investigates their interaction at the molecular, cellular, and whole-animal level.

Medicinal chemists will work closely with other scientists in related fields such as Pharmacologists, Pharmacists and Biochemists.

[ history ]

Agonist

Any molecule that improves the activity of a different molecule; e.g., a hormone, which acts as an agonist when it binds to its receptor, thus triggering a biochemical response.

[ history ]

Antagonist

A molecule that blocks the ability of a given chemical to bind to its receptor, preventing a biological response.

[ history ]

Assay

A biological test, measurement or analysis to determine whether compounds have the desired effect either in a living organism, outside an organism, or in an artificial environment.
