Overview

Meteor showers occur when dust particles from comets enter and burn up in the atmosphere, giving the appearance of a comet. Comets are made up of rocky ices, including frozen water, carbon dioxide, methane, and ammonia. These nuclei vaporize as light warms them, causing the gasses and dust to streak behind it, creating the streaking effect.

Comets are looked on often as symbols of omens.
