Science: Astronomy: Amateur

[ history ]

Overview

Amateur astronomy is a hobby that many people pursue who are interested in astronomy, yet not working in the field. Some do work in a related field and still pursue the pastime. The tools these enthusiasts use can be as advanced as a computer controlled telescope, or as basic as a good pair of binoculars.

Although a standard backyard can be a good place for viewing in peace, many amateurs enjoy going to "star parties". These gathering usually take place in an area of high elevation, away from pollution, specifically light pollution. Light pollution is one of the biggest problems a backyard observer has. Once a prime spot is located, people come from all around the area to enjoy their hobby with others.
