| Abnormalities in fetus development can occur throughout pregnancy. These may include gross anatomic defects that arise from improper formation, folding, or regression of embryologic components. Mortality rates differ based on the severity of the disease. Some defects are completely asymptomatic that certain individuals may never discover a patent embryologic abnormality unless surgery is performed in the affected area. Variations in vessel connections are generally considered normal. Embryologic defects have been strongly linked to genetic and environmental factors. Vitamin and mineral malnutrition can lead to neurologic disorders in the child. Folic acid is particularly important for the first four weeks of development. Substance abuse and use of certain pharmacological drugs can also lead to developmental disorders in the fetus. Pregnant mothers are advised to avoid alcohol, cigarette smoke, and narcotics. |
