Overview

Communication involves the ability to perceive, interpret, and express thought. A deficit in any of these functions will result in a breakdown of communication. Communication disorders can be neurologic in origin, either affecting the brain or the nerves that process sensory information. Neuromuscular problems of the organs associated with speech can also contribute to communication disorders.
