Computers: Speech Technology

[ history ]

General Information

Speech technology is used in a variety of fields, but only recently have modern computing systems finally reached the processing speeds and memory capacities necessary to make speech technologies truly usable.

[ history ]

Speech Signal Enhancement

Speech Signal Enhancement is the science of taking noisy or garbled speech signals and applying various digital signal processing techniques to make the signal more intelligible; to make a speech transmission clearer and easier to understand.

[ history ]

Speech Recognition

Speech Recognition technology allows computers to translate speech in pure audio or spoken form, and convert it to text. This is not the same thing as trying to understand speech which is the domain of natural language understanding.

[ history ]

Speech Synthesis

Speech Synthesis technology gives computers a voice of their own. Recent advances in the field have replaced the robotic voices of previous years with voices that are pleasant and natural sounding.

[ history ]

Voice Analysis

Voice Analysis is the art of interpreting voice signals to have a computer make automated decisions about them. Lie detectors that analyze speech are an example of this.

[ history ]

Voice Compression

The field of Voice Compression concerns itself with making the size of an audio recording of speech smaller, to facilitate faster transmission of speech over digital networks or to create smaller audio files to conserve storage space on a desired storage medium (hard disk, optical disk, etc.). VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phone systems are critically reliant on effective compression algorithms.

[ history ]

Voice Verification

Voice Verification technology attempts to identify a person, or confirm their claimed identity, by analyzing the acoustic properties of their voice and matching them against previous recordings.
