Description

The acronym stands for "Practical Extraction and Report Language" and most CGI (Common Gateway Interface) scripts on websites use Perl to process textual data, in some form or another. It has been described as a complicated language that can be easy to learn. PERL was created by Larry Wall and is based off of the C programming language.

Designed to be easy to use, efficient and compact, the language is suited to high-performance systems management or manipulation-intensive data processing, where text is involved. For example, the underlying processing which runs Open Site is a CGI script written in Perl, showing its suitability to large-scale, text-intensive projects.
