Definition

The Internet is a loosely-organized collaboration of computer networks, and relies heavily on the voluntary adherence to open protocols and procedures defined as Internet Standards. Internet Standards refer to protocols, procedures, and conventions that are used in or by the Internet, whether or not they are part of the TCP/IP protocol suite.

Protocols that have been developed outside of the online environment and/or standardized by a non-Internet organization, and have since been adopted by the Internet, are not strictly online protocols, and the Internet Standard will only outline relevant information as opposed to the entire protocol.

Internet Standards are designed to be stable and well-understood specifications, that are technically competent, have multiple, independent, and interoperable implementations with substantial operational experience, enjoys significant public support, and are recognizably useful in some or all parts of the Internet.
