Definition

Hacking is defined as the creation of, or the modification and manipulation of computer software and hardware to achieve greater functionality and performance. This can also be extended to other electronic equipment such as video game systems, audio/video equipment, even toys.

In some circles, the term hacker has gained a negative connotation, particularly because the general public only hears reports of individuals gaining unauthorized access to remote locations, usually for malicious purposes. Nonetheless, the most accurate definition is a highly skilled individual who uses their technical knowledge to push things beyond their perceived limits.

The activities of hackers are generally categorized into three different areas of expertise: Computer programming, computer security, and hardware modification.
